Fire Safety

Did you know you have on average only 3 minutes to escape your home if a fire erupts?

Every second counts!

Fire Safety is a topic we are passionate about at O’Connor Insurance Associates.  Many of our clients have had the unfortunate experience of having a home fire.  Anyone who has had a home fire will tell you making sure you get your family out safely is all that matters.  This page provides you with resources and tools to get your family out of your home safely.

Home escape plans save lives!  When a smoke alarm sounds you have less than 3 minutes to get out of your home.  Depending on where the fire starts you need to have at least 2 ways out of your home.  Escape plans always include a meeting spot so you know all your family members got out safely.  Develop a home escape plan, draw it on graph paper and PRACTICE it with your family.  Kids love participating and it really helps for them to understand the plan if they helped create it.

In a fire, working smoke alarms alert you in time to escape safely.  Three out of five home fire deaths happen from fires insmoke detector homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.  Make sure you have smoke alarms installed properly in your home.  Change the batteries 2x per year and check them every month to make sure they are in working order.  Kids need to hear what the smoke detector sounds like so test when they are present.

These steps don’t take a lot of time.  Take a few minutes today to keep your family safe every day!
