Insurance policies expire everyone knows that. But did you know your detectors expire too? Your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors expire and if even they are in working order it is recommended you replace them when they expire.
The carbon monoxide detector has a date printed on it. I took a picture of my carbon detector while I was changing the battery to show you. Manufacturers sometimes will print the expiration date on them. If the expiration date is not printed you will need to refer to the instructions that came with it. Most detectors are good for 5-7 years. When in doubt replace it!
Smoke detectors have a life expectancy as well. Battery operated smoke detectors should be replaced after 10 years. Many of our homes have them hard wired by code. They still need to have the batteries replaced to ensure they would work if the power fails.
