Do You Know When You Can Pass a Stopped School Bus in NC?

[Back to School] It’s that time of year – when traffic patterns are thrown into a tailspin, and you have to leave your house 30 minutes early so you are not late to work. Yes, school is back in session.

School buses often cause some challenges for drivers as they stop to pick up children. If you don’t know when you are supposed to stop when a school bus is stopped, you could jeopardize the safety and even the life of a child.

Please take a look at the North Carolina laws for stopping when a school bus is stopped, taken straight from the NC Driver Handbook. And please pay attention to the flashing yellow lights indicating you are driving through a school zone.

Slow down in school zones. Children are often erratic in that they may jump out in front of your car without a moment’s notice as they change directions to catch up with a friend. There would be nothing worse than injuring a child, let alone doing it at a high rate of speed.
