It’s that time of year – when traffic patterns are thrown into a tailspin, and you have to leave your house 30 minutes early so you are not late to work. Yes, school is back in session.

Pop Quiz

  1. Do you know when you need to stop for a school bus?  If you are not 110% sure please take a look at this picture.  NC School Bus Stop LawYou might even want to print it.  The school bus rules are in place to ensure students enter and exit safety from the bus to the sidewalk. Cars are required to keep a safe distance and drivers when in doubt wait a few extra minutes to make sure all the kids are safely on the sidewalk before you pull away.
  2. Do you know how fast North Carolina law allows you to travel through an active school zone? When you see the flashing yellow lights as you approach a school zone you need to watch for the posted speed limit.  The speed limit for each school zone is different but when in doubt slow waaaaaay down to 25 mph or less and stay alert.

Children are often erratic in that they may jump out in front of your car without a moment’s notice as they change directions to catch up with a friend. There would be nothing worse than injuring a child, let alone doing it at a high rate of speed.  Please allow some extra time to get to your destination so you can slow down, stop for buses and be on the look out for kiddos.

If you have new drivers in your household please take a minute to review this information.  It is really important and a quick review is always helpful.
