Please Drive While You Are Driving Driving Distractions – That Will Scare the H-E-double hockey Sticks Out of You

As a mother, wife, sister, and insurance agent people’s driving habits are on my mind more than the average “normal” person.  If someone speeds (and I am not talking about 39 in a 35) on the parkway by my house I am worried that not only my life but the lives of my friends and neighbors are at risk. When a client calls because another person hit them while that driver was not paying attention to the road I am glad my client was not injured and yet mad my client has to deal with the car repairs because of another person’s negligence.

In an article I read today from Erie Insurance I was scared stiff to read what people are doing that create distractions when they are supposed to be driving. It has been pounded into your head that you should not text and drive.  Everyone knows how distracting text messages are.  But it is positively frightening to think I am on the road with people who are taking pictures of the scenery WHILE DRIVING.  Are you crazy people?  I have my precious cargo aka kids in my car.  Please just stop it.  Put your hands on the wheel (10:00 and 2:00 in case you forgot) and keep your eyes on the road.

Maybe we should all put signs on our cars that says “Please drive while you are driving” as a subtle reminder of what you are supposed to be doing.  Let me know what you think after you read this article by Erie Insurance.  In it taking pictures is just one of the distractions mentioned in a study done by Erie Insurance of people using the hashtag #whiledriving.  Scary stuff – very scary stuff.  Be safe out there. Keep your eye on the road and be a good defensive driver!
